catholic church - muffers - 09-Jan-2007 what would have been the catholic church for the Longton area around the year 1850, anyone know[?] - accy stan - 09-Jan-2007 Good one Muffers, I don,t believe there was a Catholic church around Longton until 1893-St. Oswalds. The closest would have been one of these- St Marys - Lea 1775 3.4 miles St Wilfreds - Preston 1792 4 St Ignatius- " 1838 4 St Marys " 1768 4 St Marys Leyland 1845 3.7 miles Our Lady & St Patrick Walton 1856 4.5 " St Augustine of Cantebury Preston 1838 4 " St Andrews Cottam 1783 4.3 " Holy Cross Croston 1858 4.8 " As far as I know these are the only ones within 5 miles so take your pick, good luck. - accy stan - 09-Jan-2007 Sorry, that didn,t come out the way I did it. The church name is first then the town followed by the date built and then the distance from Longton. Can I help further Muffers? - muffers - 10-Jan-2007 Thanks Brian It might help with the information I have. Now I have another problem I did not know that there are two Longton's, one in Lancashire and one in Staffordshire. I shall have to look back at my records again and see if I can determine which area my great grandmother came from. The one from Leyland lived at Ribgy farm which was either in Leyland or Longton. I get so mixed up with this genealogy. - David - 10-Jan-2007 At least the two Longton's are in different counties. Locally, (to Leyland), there are two Warton's, one between Freckleton and Lytham, and one just north of Lancaster. The latter being the home of the George Washington family. It's at that Warton Parish Church that the United States flag flies every July 4th, a flag that once flew over the dome of the US Congress. - muffers - 10-Jan-2007 Somewhere I have a picture taken from an old english newspaper of Washingtons home in the UK. - shuffy - 10-Jan-2007 Averil if it was Longton in staffs they would almost certainly be connected to the pottery trade - David - 10-Jan-2007 quote: Originally posted by muffers Somewhere I have a picture taken from an old english newspaper of Washingtons home in the UK. About five years ago I was in England on vacation and visited Warton on July 4th. Old Glory was indeed flying from the Parish Church. The Washington Family home had Old Glory draped from a bedroom window....trouble was, it was upside down. Ah well. [ ]
