Runshaw Hall - JohnH - 19-Apr-2002 Hi all, anyone know what's happening at Runshaw Hall (back of the park, on the way to Euxton) these days! In the late 70's I worked as a gardener at the hall. At the time it was a restaurant. JohnH Edited by - johnh on 22 Apr 2002 22:56:56 - Martin - 23-Apr-2002 I think it's been a few things over the years. At one time it was home for either mentally ill or old people, can't remember which. Martin In The Pink - Terry - 27-Jan-2008 Your right, in the late fifty's and sixties it was what we called in them days, a loony bin. as a youngster I used to go bird nesting down there. Living in Farington that was a whole day out then, we also used to love playing on worden park. - William R - 28-Jan-2008 Pre-war, Runshaw Hall was a refuge run by the Brothers of Charity for mentally defective young men - I believe it was an off-shoot of Liseaux Hall at the top if Dawson Lane. These unfortunates would be escorted to St.Mary`s Roman Catholic Church near The Cross for services. I well remember the long crocodile and wondered why such deformities in mind and body had ocurred, and admired the care and attention given by their carers. Would it happen today, or would they be shut away from public contact? Certainly food for thought. - noel - 28-Jan-2008 Or worse still William, just left to their own devices???. - Spitfire - 28-Jan-2008 William, I can offer part of an answer. Some of them are living next door to me! The bungalow next door was bought by a company who have leased it out to Liseaux Hall. It is occupied by three ladies and one man, plus a team of 24hour care staff. Usually 3/4 during the day and 2 at night. I wonder how this charity is financed? My brother, following a stroke, requires two carers each morning and evening and knowing the astronomical amount of money that costs,I shudder to think of the carers, 24 hour bill next door. The fact that there are mixed sexes living there may suggest that there has been some amalgamation in the past between Liseaux and The Brothers - that is only guesswork on my part. I have no idea why they are there or how many other similar schems exist in the area. It may well be a `care in the community` type of thing. Having them living there is certainly no problem (apart from the odd taxi driver who is too idle to get out of the car to ring the bell and blows his horn instead). The only outward sign of anything being out of the ordinary is that the large, attached double garage has been converted into a single flat - shuffy - 28-Jan-2008 Most of the carers who work for Liseaux are employed directly by Liseaux which of course is owned by the catholic charity brothers of charity. They have quite a few rented bungalows in the community and run day clubs in several venues for their patients and the general public to mix. - Spitfire - 28-Jan-2008 Dedra, That ties in with the comings and goings of the residents each day. - Karen - 29-Jan-2008 Runshaw Hall was bought by my brother-in law after the fire. It is now developed into very nice apartments. T.D. - JohnH - 16-Apr-2008 Glad to hear the building is being used - always liked it. Karen, did the barn to the rear of the house get developed or pulled down? |
