British Commercial Vehicle Museum - Martin - 01-Feb-2004 quote: £100k Lotto boost for vehicle museum A LEYLAND museum will be motoring ahead after scooping a grant of nearly £100,000. The British Commercial Vehicle Museum, on King Street, has won a boost of £96,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The museum will be using the funds to sort its archived collection of records and documents. A professional archivist will be employed at the museum, using money from the grant, to oversee the sorting and indexing of all the artefacts. http://www.leylandtoday.co.uk/ViewArticle.aspx?SectionID=77&ArticleID=730626 - rocketmanjohn - 02-Feb-2004 The museum is well worth a visit. A few years ago I took a friend of mine, [originally from Bournemouth, now New Orleans,] we both enjoyed the exhibits very much and spent a long time there, imagine his surprise when one of the double decker buses was painted in Bournemouth colours and showing his local route on the front. Same subject, vaguely, my wife and I tried to name all the bus stops on the route through Leyland that the conductors used to call. How many can Forum members remember? John - anacortesdamp - 02-Feb-2004 Well, John. I'll have a go - route 111, Earnshaw Bridge to Preston: 1. Broadfield Drive (the pub opposite Robinson's Farm)? 2. Cowling Lane 3. Seven Stars 4. Wade Hall 5. Forestway 6. Junior School/Cricket Club 7. The Cross 8. Westgate 9. The Regent/Grundy's/Kwiksave 10. Gasworks 11. Chapel Brow/Police Station 12. Railway Station 13. Mill Street 14. Farington Lodge? 15. Centurion Way 16. Fowler Lane 17. Bashall's Wood (hardly ever stopped there!) 18. Lostock Methodist/Railway Inn 19. ? (Another pub?) 20. Pleasant Retreat 22. Lostock Gas Works 23. ?? (the pub at the railway bridge) 24. ?? (the first stop after the railway bridge) 25. New Hall Lane 26. Middleforth - bottom of Pear Tree Brow 27. Middleforth - just after the Fire Station 28. New Inn ? (where the old footbridge goes over the river) 29. Strand Road 30. Preston Railway Station Arrive Fox Street bus station. Frank Damp - William R - 02-Feb-2004 I remember the Sumpter Horse at the top of the hill, was it No.19? The Commercial Vehicle Museum - I paid it a visit expecting it to be a Museum of Leyland vehicles, but was surprised to see that all manufacturers were exhibiting. But I agree it is well worth a visit. Was Middleforth where the old Fire Station used to be, or still is? It must be fifty years ago when I last went that way, used to get the 109 Ribble to Preston from Bent Bridge. W.R. - anacortesdamp - 03-Feb-2004 From the Cross on to Preston, William, the 109 and 111 routes were the same. I think the pub at the top of Pear Tree brow, just north of new Hall Lane, was the Pear Tree and the Sumpter Horse was the one just south of where the road kinked to go over the railway tracks. it had a very large car park, as I remember. With no personal wheels and a Methodist upbginging, I wasn't a big "pubber" before we left Leyland. Frank - rocketmanjohn - 03-Feb-2004 Well done Frank, you remember more than I, was'nt 'The Triangle' after your No 28? William, I too used to catch the 109 from Bent Bridge, if you remember, it was a toss up as to which came first, the Fishwicks 'Euxton Lane' which drove down Bent Lane, and cut out the middle of Leyland, or the Ribble 109. They stopped at different sides of Bent Bridge and if one waited at the wrong side it was a sprint to get to the other. Bent Bridge was a notorious place for accidents because there was no footpath. John - noel - 03-Feb-2004 And he remembers more than me, and I live here still!! one correction, New Hall Lane is New Lane, I went past it today 8-) And I think 19 would be the Victoria? I thought the museum was going to move to the dockland area in Preston. Is this still on? - Spitfire - 03-Feb-2004 Noel, I believe that the move is still planned for next year. The £100K grant is to hire a professional archivist to sort all the records and documents, there are loads of them - I believe. William, The fire station is still there at Middleforth. It`s rather a suprise as there has been a drive in recent years to to close the smaller ones. Leyland (someone correct me if I`m wrong) lost it`s full-time status and now relys on `retained` firemen. Pictures can always be taken & posted if anyone has memories or would like to see changes to the area. For example, the wide open space that once was BTR. - Martin - 03-Feb-2004 I saw the builders looking busy at the old BTR site when I was in Leyland earlier this month. What happened to all the health worries about the land? - noel - 21-Aug-2005 There was a USA on the road ralley at the museum today. There weren't as many exhibits as I had hoped but what was there was well worth having a look at.
