Longmeanygate
#1
Hello chaps, first time poster here!

Just wondering if anyone can help with this. There's a small bit of Longmeanygate (I think someone referred to it as "Shortmeanygate", which makes more sense!), that links the bottom of Golden Hill Lane with Schleswig Way bypass.

This part of Longmeanygate is more built up than the other side; it's restricted to 30mph, but the traffic that goes down there does not seem to adhere!

Also, it's very hard for residents to get from Lowther Drive / Cresent to the other side of the road as there is no pedestrian crossing, even at the lights. A lot of school kids (including my own) live in the Lowther Drive estate, and it seems like it's some mistake that one hasn't been put in.

After looking around I found minutes of some council meetings where a crossing was suggested but it was refused and the issue raised with Lancashire Highways. This was back in 2004, and I can find no reference to any comeback.

Does anyone out there know of any reason why this might be the case? Can anyone shed any light on this?

Many thanks in advance.

Paul.

Hello, Paul. (Not sure about the Mr Ploppy screen name - LOL!) I can't help you directly with this issue, but if you search the forum archives, you'll find that a few months back we had a local councillor post once or twice on here. If he's still a member, you could email him via the forum and see if he can answer your question. Can anyone remember the councillor's name to aid Paul further?

Not many get it - but well done! [Big Grin]

Thanks for the pointer about the councillor. I was actually going to go to the next meeting, which I think is at the start of October and ask the question... Just wondering if anyone on here might know so I can go fore-warned and fore-armed!

Thanks - great site by the way...

Schleswig Way is a fairly recent addition to the landscape (10 years or so). Before that Longmeanygate wasn't intercepted by any other roads until you got out towards Whitestake.

I remember the traffic lights going in at the Tiger and I thought they had pedestrian "walk/don't walk" signals at first. OF course there wasn't much residential development off Longmeanygate back then so maybe the powers that be didn't think pedestrians would be an issue.

Oh, of course! I had forgotten that. Personally I think I would have gone for "Bob" if I had to pick a name from Blackadder, but each to his own!

I think Hugh Lane ran from Longmeanygate in a loop to Croston Rd.
There was a tiny, round cottage with a thatched roof on the bend of Hugh Lane, it was still there into the 1960's. Anyone remember?
Schleswig Way was built in the early 80's when we lived on Croston Road [left in August '81 for the US], I well remember a local motorbike racer testing his Manx Norton on the yet unopened road, music to my ears.

Yes, but Mr Ploppy couldn't compete with Bob when it came to wringing the maximum comedic value out of a single syllable. I think only Rowan Atkinson could pronounce Bob with such style!
