Linda / Caroline, You`r previous remarks regarding peoples unwillingness to travel has only served to re-enforce something I`ve known for a very long time. That is - a large percentage of the population are very selfish.
I was a member of a badminton club for over 25 years and although the membership changed over the years the majority of members joined on day one. Three of us (shared driving) travelled from Leyland to Preston every Tuesday to play. On the occasions that Preston was closed (reburbishment etc.) we would play at either Leyland or Bamber Bridge and always half the membership would drop out, during this period, because `it was too far to travel`. I guess it`s the same all over the place. People (or at least , some of them) never change. ( I`ve just stepped off the soap box by the way).[Tongue]

Jim, in some respects the people unwilling to travel are possibly right - after all, is it ethical to increase petrol consumption just for a leisure activity? But that's not the reason the people in my yoga group put forward - they just can't be bothered to travel more than 5 minutes from home! What they don't seem to realise is that without the three of four of us in the class who are prepared to put ourselves out and get to the class wherever it's been held, the class wouldn't have enough members to be viable.

It depends how badly they want to do something. My flower class at Whittle village hall hasn't got anyone apart from me ( the teacher) from Whittle they come from Penwortham,Euxton, Chorley and one even comes from Bolton, as its the first evening floral art class for a couple of years.

Folk don't like going out on dark nights, either. When I changed my Art Classes from Thursday evenings to one Saturday ( all day) per month the numbers were much more reliable. They also like the jolly lunchtime atmosphere and 'day out with friends' feeling. Of course, everone's exhausted at the end of a day, and I realise this wouldn't work for other activities.
