I remember Lever House and the old wooden bungalow.I lived in Cross street.I used to go fishing in the two ponds that were next to each other near the old track that came out on to Lydiate Lane.I used to 'Scrump' apples from the Convent off Moss lane and was often chased by the Nuns.Years later when I was a paperboy and delivered to the Convent I always felt a twinge of guilt(and worried I maybe recognised !!)I remember Mad Marion, used to scare us quite a bit.I remember the motorway being built and the Leverhouse estate. As regards St Ambrose I recall Cannon Bates, and his wonderful Nettle Beer.I loved going in the old vicarge and the aroma of his old pipe tobacco is forever embedded in my childhood memories. He was always open to visitors especially us kids.I still don't understand why they knocked the house down and built that awful dormer bungalow !

Welcome to the forum Andy. Its amazing how things on here jog the memory, Tony asked if I remembered the Leylands and I did`nt until I saw the names Una and Arnold, so yes I do remember them.
Canon Bates was a very nice man I to remember the old vicarage and the homely aroma of the pipe, did`nt you go around the back of the vicarage to get into the convent orchard ? those nuns certainly did`nt like us kids having their apples[8D] Did you never go for Marions apples we did once as kids and she caught us, it was pretty funny, she was rather amused by it.
My friend Marilyn Bush lived in the wooden house next door to marion and I think the Silcocks farm was on the other side.
sorry Tony I dont remember the handsome young lad who delivered the papers[Smile][Wink]quote:

Did the Leylands have daughters called Joan & Barbara? I seem to remember them from Ambroses. Also have fond memories of Canon Bateson & his nettle beer, we used to visit him when playing in the area, he always invited us in & offered us a drink, he was never to busy to see us. I Always enjoyed the garden parties at the old vicarage.

They eventually moved to the shop on Moss Lane in the early 70's. The reason I ask is that I used to mate around with Brian (Barney) Leyland in my late teens.
Love the memory of Harry Dwyer cutting the meat and whistling. I used to think it was more of a habitual blowing rather than a tuneful whistle.(I was very young when my nan would take me up the Brow and call in for a quarter of boiled ham). I wonder if it tasted better after he'd covered it with all those germs?

Hi Sandie,

I remember Buxton Bros. It's now Roy Turner's (Frank's son)Photography Store.
The drug store next door was 'Harrison's' ... Mr Harrison lived in the Lancaster Lane area and used to walk to work through Hough's Fields ... there was a stile on Wigan Road.

Now who remembers the two newsagents ...'Thackers' on one side of Chapel Brow and 'Pembertons' on the other side?

...The boy stood on the burning deck
his pocket full of crackers,
Some he got from Charlie Pem's
and some from Louis Thacker's!!!

Ciao Karen
