Dancing lights over Farington

I have noticed some strange lights darting around the sky over Farington. Can anybody shed some light ( No pun intended ) onto what they are ? There are about 4 of them and they look like strong beams but they are constantly darting around back and forth. Could they be UFOs ? Probably not but answers are needed !

hi all i am a long time lurker who has only recently signed up to the forums even though i have lived in leyland for 35 years

as for the lights in the sky they are from blackpool, i live in ulnes walton end of leyland and can see them most evenings
they are like giant search lights on the ground that move around and shine up onto the clouds etc
there used to be some at the capitol center at walton le dale many years ago too

I was going to mention the Capitol Centre lights but hadn't seen them for some time.
My late friend swore he saw a UFO from his house in School Lane way back, a large light in the sky that hovered overhead and suddenly sped away.
But I don't believe in men from Mars.

I have seen a UFO but didn't think the beam type lights which have now been explained were one. Now surely Noel you cant be serious when you say you don't believe in men from Mars ! Seriously though what I saw was not of this world and could not have been any of the usual suspects that sceptics come out with. Now that aside we (Earth ) can surely not be the only civilised planet in the whole of the Universe I would be ignorant to think such a thing. The Universe has only been explored to our limits which could very well be very primitive explorations compared to " Other " beings out there ! Quantum physics and the like open your mind to time travel etc and worm holes and black holes for instance could well be portals to another Universe who knows ! We will probably never know in our lives. Years ago people laughed at the idea of space travel or even the idea of flying ! 100 years is nothing compared to how long the Universe has existed !

Rotating searchlights as advertising attention-getters were very popular in the US until about 10 years ago. They were most widely used by car dealerships.

Most of them were WW2 surplus anti-aircraft searchlights, which got virtually no use during the war. They are carbon-arc, usually, and they've finally become too expensive to maintain and use far too much electrical power for this more environmentally conscious time.

Can't say I'm sorry to see them gone.
