Parkinson's Balloon
#11
The Balloons set off from the Parkinson home on North road ,I very often see them inflating them as I am going past ,over Cocker bar Bridge and just round the Bad bends.

As I understand, Derek Grimshaw, the Managing Director of Parkinson's, has been flying the Parkinson balloon for about 15 years without any mishaps.

We get a lot of them in Washington State, but not around Anacortes (too much water!). The biggest meeting is every spring in Albuquerque, New Mexico. They get a couple of thousand balloons there very year. I remember a picture of a balloon in the form of a pair of jeans, with the basket hanging off the bottom of one leg. One assumes that was the upwind leg.

Hi Frank.
As you say Derek Grimshaw has been flying these balloons for a number of years ,but he did have a bit of a mishap last year as he got tangled up with some electricity cables,I am not sure if the case has been settled or not but there was a report in the "Post"whilstI was in Hospital so I am not sure of the outcome.I dont know you pesonally But I think you may have been at Balshaws When my son Roger White was there.I attend a Luncheon club at St, Andrews And I sometimes sit with one of your relationsI think it will be your Uncle Bert,I have tried to get him to use the Forum but up to now he doesn!t seem to have done so

for those who maybe don't know both Derek and his wife Kath ( nee Singleton) went to Balshaws, Kath was in the same class as Eileen and I Frank.

I'm sure I went to school with Peter and Derek Grimshaw at Farington Junior. The names ring a bell.

Derek and I were fellow students at Blackpool Technical College. I think he's a year younger than me.

We used to car-pool with twop otehr students from Preston in my old 1938 Austin 7 Ruby, and when we were really lucky, he got to use the Grimshaw family Morris Oxford. I lived with my folks in Hargreaves Avenue, so it wasn't a big deal for Derek to pick me up, as they lived next door to the Methodist manse on Canberra Road.

I was studying Engineering (ON Diploma) and Derek was doing a hotel and catering course, with an emphasis on the bakery industry. We really enjoyed Wednesdays, as that was the day the student baked bread. Snacks in the car on the way home were delicious - didn't really need dinner when we got home!

Simpler days!

Frank

P.s.

If anyone can get a message to Derek, tell him we'd love to get a domestic-sized recipe for barmcakes. Ou nearest source is 80 miles away, which makes the a bit expensive unless you were ging that way.
