Computer security

I don't get viruses or other nasties, even on machines, even those like this one I am on that does not have any form of antivirus on them. The main thing you need to fix is the problem between the keyboard and the seat.

If you make sure you don't visit dodgy sites, don't install pirated or 'free' software from the Internet or from your friend, don't click on random things that 'need to install something on your computer to let you see them', don't open attachments in emails (even when they are from friends) unless you are expecting them and know what you are opening. etc. then you won't get a virus or any problems.

Forget clicking on the 'Here is a funny joke video I thought I would email to you..., now is the time of year when people also open any virtual greetings cards which can also install viruses or do other dodgy stuff while you are admiring the animation on the screen.

All the above items and MANY more will allow viruses on your computer. Don't do the above stuff and use common sense online.

You will only need antivirus and firewall as a safety net then rather than a first line of defence against a rogue user out to damage your machine (that is usually yourself!!!).

A couple more:
Use a browser that supports plugins (such as Firefox) and use NoScript (to disable scripts on the page) and Ghostery (to disable automatic links from the page). Don't allow any scripts to run on pages that may not be trustworthy. If that breaks the page then too bad. Adblock Plus is nice too. Smile

Never, ever allow installation of new "search bars" etc. They can install other things along with the search bar...

Note that if you are running linux it's still nice to others to use a virus scanner. Even if your own computer won't be harmed by a virus it's nice to know that you've not passed one on to some poor Windows user. Wink

I have had a nasty virus recently, called Allurian, the FBI were supposed to have stopped it some months ago but it has re-emerged, it took all my photos of life since we moved to Crete 7 years worth a nasty virus, not being wellup on computers, could it come in on cookies, I believe it can clone ligitimate websites,I was asked to download an update on Google Earth which I did, but it asked me for a payment so I declined it, as far as I know Google Earth is free, so It may have come in on that, I use Microsofts own anti-virus protection but it got passed that. It`s a minefield with viruses from crime organizations to just malicious people.

Well I've downloaded a UBUNTU trial, it gives the option of using Windows or Ubuntu before boot up. It's certainly different, and comes with a decent kit. I'll need some time to give a critique.
