I've been using Ubuntu for quite a long time, Noel. I chose it simply because I couldn't afford Windows at the time! It is excellent once you get used to it - I don't feel the urge to return to Microsoft now.
Recently Ubuntu has also changed to a tile-style interface slightly similar to Windows 8. When they did that I changed to a different linux: Mint. It's still Ubuntu-based, but has a "proper" desktop, which I think is better than Ubuntu anyway.
You can also test-drive it from a live CD just like Ubuntu.
