Woodland gets a £4m facelift

CONTAMINATED woodland in Leyland has been given a new lease of life.

A £4m restoration project was launched at Farington Hall Wood, off Wheelton Lane, after it was revealed that the land was badly contaminated.
Environmental health officers discovered that the soil contained dangerous chemicals including asbestos, arsenic, mercury and lead, because the area had been used as an industrial dumping ground 50 years ago.
The owners of the land, BMW Ltd, promised to restore the land into a community space by undertaking the massive restoration project.
This week, the first stage of the clean up has been completed and the Mayor of South Ribble Coun Jon Hesketh marked the occasion by planting a tree in the woods.

I hope it lives!

So much land must sadly have been contaminated in this way as a result of early industrial activity.
Along the M62 there is an area which has many signs erected to beware contaminated land -keep out -danger, which William R believes was the site of the Exide Battery works at Chequerbent.
