Hi. I'm writing from California. I just discovered that my husband's great-grandparents were married in Leyland in 1852, and his grandmother was born somewhere near there in 1856. I won't ask if anyone on this forum knew her. [ ]
There's a puzzle which I'm hoping a local resident might be able to help solve: on his grandmother's birth register it gives for her mother's residence something which looks like Bambers Yard, Preston. It's hard to make out the handwriting. Does that sound familiar to anybody?
By the way, the great-grandmother was Isabella Noble, who married John Stevenson. Their granddaughter was Martha Isabella Stevenson, who married Arthur Hesketh in Garstang in 1878. Any cousins reading this?
Okay, so now you're groaning, and saying to yourselves, "Another one of those Yanks on a quest for roots." Well, yes, that's true. But at least they're LEYLAND roots.
Yank; Hi, I'm on vacation in Leyland at this time, I live in Pomona, California, near Los Angeles. I'm Preston born but visiting relatives in Leyand.... There is, or was, a Bambers Yard in Preston. I have an idea it may have gone under the wrecking ball to make way for the fairly new St George's shopping center....can't remember if that was Bambers Yard or Bambers Court ???? Anyone ?? You may get better results from your inquiry if you mentioned the location of the wedding....Preston, or Leyland, and which church ?? You probably would get some results from the Church of the Latter Day Saints web page, where they have an excellent family research page, regardless of your personal religious orientation. Good luck.

Bamber's Yard I think used to run up where the Guild Hall now is.
It used to go through to the old bus station on Tithebarn Street.

Thanks, both, that's very helpful. Although sad that it's gone; I thought at least there'd be a plaque saying "Martha Stevenson was born here."
All right, now, don't laugh, remember I'm American, so I speak English as a second language: A "yard" is like a street, then? Here, a yard usually means the area outside the house where the lawn and flowers grow. I thought maybe Bambers Yard was the name of a village or neighborhood.
David, I used to live in Pomona, before I moved to Long Beach.
The only thing I know about the marriage is that the LDS website says they were married in Leyland on 10 Nov 1852, and the GRO index says it was in Chorley district. Their daughter's birth certificate from 1856 says they lived in Bamber's Yard, Preston.
How big is Leyland today? From this website, it looks like an active place.

No a yard (apart from being a unit of measure :-) ) is usually an enclosed area used for storage, eg a timber yard. Usually a flagged or concrete surface, and locked for security.

As I remember, Bamber's Yard ran from about where the Lune Street entrance to St George's Shopping Centre is through to about the Curry's store on Friargate. I wasn't aware there was any residnetial property there, though.

Well, John Stevenson drove a cab, and this was back in the 1850’s, so maybe they had their residence adjacent to the barn, or stable, or whatever they called where they kept the cab and horses. I don't know if that would have been customary back then.
Thanks for all your information about the location. I was able to find where it would have been on a map.
A note of clarification....in the USA, the garden is usually referred to as the 'yard'.
At our small 'meet' last night, Yank, the poster, was a topic of one of our discussions. For no reason what-so-ever, I had envisioned Yank as being a female, it was only when Jim mentioned Yank as "he", that I realized Yank could well be a 'he'.

Hi Yank, Have discovered that Arthur HESKETH was born in Garstang, St Michaels-on-Wyre in 1854. So he would be 24 years old when he married. I was due to veiw the Leyland church records later this week, looking for entries regarding my own GGM. So keeping my eyes open for your connection at the same time is no trouble.
But -DON`T HOLD YOUR BREATH, disappointmrnt is the norm in these searches. Watch this space.
