Mick, I agree with everything you said about Cookson`s fish. I used to pass two other chippies on my way to Cookson`s. That was a measure of how good I rated them.
At present, the best ones around (in my opinion) come from the mobile unit that parks off Dunkirk Lane on Monday and Thursday evenings.

Fascinating reading Mick, my mum used to love the fish from there, bought fresh daily you can't get that now I bet, not locally anyway.
Myself I always preferred the ones from the bottom of Dunkirk Lane round about that time, I didn't like the taste or texture of Cookson's chips. Strange how people differ isn't it.
I think the Dunkirk Lane one has changed hands now as well. I would always go for an English shop as the Chinese ones don't seem to get the batter right. However I can't claim to be an expert these days but there is Th'owd Chippy opposite the top of Westgate which is English run and probably the best in my opinion, in Leyland. The other English ones are on Hough Lane opposite Iceland's store , not very good, burnt bits and very brown chips and opposite Northgate on Golden Hill Lane.

I always stopped at Cooksons on a Saturday night having had a 'few' pints, I would ask for an extra crispy fish and mushy peas, the finest ever. Mr. Cookson was a softly spoken man, nearly bald, with what was left, a gingery colour. Mrs Cookson always looked very fierce, but she was actually a nice lady.

I remember cycling home one night from my girl friend's house on Dunkirk Lane, a woman had been knocked down by a car right outside Cookson's and killed. Her body was still in the road surrounded by police ambulancemen and onlookers. A long lasting memory. Did Cookson have distinctive round lens glasses?

I thougth that the f & c that I had ( 5 years ago) from Grundy's wagon on Balcarres Rd. were very good, as they were also at the chippy then in Croston. Illingworths chippy on Liverpool Rd Penwortham was good years ago,is it still so ?
The 'Cottage' at Blackpool served an excellent product also !

I didn't like Cookson's chips either, Noel.
Golden Hill Lane must've been an accident blackspot as ( anyone remember?) two lads I knew were killed on their motorbike further up opposite the sweet shop (I think this must've been around 1960). Ian Pilkington and Dave ??

Having slagged off the chips, I must add that the fish were great, Mum sent me every Saturday for them, but made her own chips...
I think he had the glasses, Noel, and I remember the ginger hair.

Grundy's is still alive and kicking!!!!
In my opinion, Happy House is by far the best in Leyland.
Thowd is OK but the portions are small. In fact, my wife was barred by mine host Bert for suggesting his prices were big and his portions small!
