PLANS to demolish a piece of South Ribble history and replace it with new housing have been met with outrage from local residents.

South Ribble planners will decide tonight whether to allow developers to demolish three historic buildings on the Farington Lodge site on Stanifield Lane in Farington.
The buildings, Holme Farm, Avenue Cottage and a barn, would be replaced with 13 new homes, by the applicant Victory Park (Holdings) Ltd, if the plans are given the green light by members of South Ribble Council's planning committee. Officials are recommending that the application be granted.
They say that the buildings have fallen into a state of disrepair and were not worthy of listing, but a local historian disagrees.
Joan Langford, a member of Leyland Historical Society and a Farington resident, said: "These buildings have a great history to them and it would be a great shame to see them replaced by new housing.

While on the subject of Farington....Many, many, years ago (late fifties), I used to play football for Goss Printing Press Co and our 'home field' was in Farington. In those far off days, the Pleasant Retreat Hotel was on an island in the milddle of the road, and it was there that we used to have to turn right up that road to get to the pitch. the pitch itself belonged to a school up there, near a railroad bridge...I'm wondering...is that school still there, and if so, what is the name of the school ??

If you mean going down Croston Road , the school you come to is St. Paul's which land-wise has changed quite a bit but I supect that was it ??

There must be a few village bounderies in that area ? Isn't the Pleasant Retreat in Lostock Hall ? And that school just up the road is in Farington, and Penwortham, and Leyland can't be too far off, not to mention Walton-le-dale ? Or is my mind scrambled about that area.

Hi Mike and welcome,
The Pleasant used to be my stamping ground many many years ago in my learning years as a drinker-50's.
The Landlord then was George Brazier and many a happy hour was spent round the piano in the small Snug.
The pianist was a lady called Mary and her husband Fred, the barman. The top of the piano as I remember was stacked perilously high with pints at the end of a singing ????? session.
I found it much changed when I visited recently for old times'sake.Very quiet and characterless-maybe I went at the wrong time of day!

Linda, If you remember - we asked for a full report on the `sights` of Amsterdam. Perhaps they are too strong for our delicate scenses [:p][:p]
