Come to think of it (finally) I too remember a Frank Sumner with a horse and cart - rag and bone man type - who used to collect 'things' from people who no longer wanted them.
Just thought I'd mention it!

In the late 40's rag and bone Frank Sumner would drive his horse and cart bawling [all in one word] 'Aayrabone', he was known as 'Cotton wool ears' in our house, for obvious reasons. In the mid 70's he also ran a house moving company and moved us from Preston back to Leyland. He arrived with an assortment of ancient 'Dormobile' type vans and a crew of 'ne'r do wells', he was a fraction of the cost of the big companies. Nothing was broken or marked, and he still had the cotton wool in his ears. Thanks Frank, happy memories.

The horse and cart to which I refer (driven by Frank Sumner's mother Joyce) comprised mainly farm produce and groceries, whilst Frank himself ran a butcher's/grocer's shop. Don't think Joyce ever went into the rag and bone trade!
