Yeah, you tell 'em, Caroline! I reckon English food has vastly improved over the last 20 years.

Maybe that's because there's so much foreign food available now [Big Grin]

Possibly, though I doubt much of the foreign fare available would be recognised in it's so-called country of origin! (Chicken tikka masala for instance was invented for the British palate and is unknown in India!)

But I do think foreign-style restaurants coming in made us pull our own socks up. Even pub food is on the up in many places. 20 years ago you'd have been lucky to get more than a pie or a ploughman's or a cheese sarnie in most GB pubs - now "gastro-pubs" are all over the place. Whereas I think the standard in restaurants in France has fallen a little as they discover the ease of the microwave and oven chips!

Noel - apologies for late reply.
Yes, it was my mum, Margaret that taught your wife, Margaret, at St. James School - she now lives in Lostock Hall.
On another forum you mentioned Frank Ryding - is he the Frank that was brought up in Dunkirk Lane, son of the cobbler that used to be near Robinsons Milk Bar in Leyland.

Incidentally, I used to live at the smithy on Dunkirk Lane - it was changed to a B & B place, is it now a private house again?

Cheers

I was at Balshaw's in the 60s with the cobbler's son Frank Riding.

I think he became a doctor and was a member of the British Antarctic Survey team.

I often wondered if he was the same Dr Frank Riding who won a Sony Radio Award for a taped diary of his exploits which was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 a few years ago.

Magicman I belive yourmother also taught my eldest son Darren at St James also. I'll tell Margaret she's living in Lostock Hall, no doubt as we live there also she'll be keeping an eye out for her. Frank Ryding, I'm not sure to be honest, I knew him when I first started work , the connection was when he married Sandra Jackson who used to torment me occasionally at Dinner time!!

dampslad - you are quite right, Frank is my cousin, but have not seen him for years, unfortunately.

noel - my mum is now more or less house bound following a combination af being sent flying on a pelican criossing by a learner driver as she left Lostock Hall library and, more recently, a spell in hospital with an attack of shingles in her mouth, caught at a local dentist!
I will e-mail her address to you so that Margaret can pop in and see her some time - she would be well pleased and pleasantly surprised to see her (if Margaret wants to, that is!!)

I'm sure Margaret would be delighted to see her again. Very sorry to hear about her accident. I look forward to getting the address.

Can you still buy tripe in Leyland, or black puddings? Not that I want any, I just wondered if Ye Olde Lancashire Fayre was still on the menu in Leyland homes? ( I'm keeping the old Topic alive here!)

Tripe? Black puddings? not really my taste but I have a friend who keeps saying he could eat a black pudding.

I'll stick to fish and chips.

No I don't think you can Caroline. Sainsbury's do a "sort of" black pudding.
My wife loves them but veggies like me, yuk!!!
