My brother has advised that, in the New Year's Honours List, former Balshaw's classmate, John Lawton, is now Professor Sir John Lawton, FRS. Is he the first Balshaw's alumnus to be knighted?

Congratulations to John. David his younger brother was in my class but I remember John quite well. Professor Sir John sounds like he's done very well in his career, which is?

I thought there was a John Lawton in my year but then I suffer from many senior moments so I don't worry about it .I do however send heartiest congratulations to the John who has been knighted.

Noel, He was elected to the Society in 1989 and now lives in York. I`ve no idea what branch of science he was involved in.

The photo of Fox Lane School shows John Lawton, 4th from the left on the back row. Frank's sister Jean is in the middle, front row. I'm 3rd from the right second row down. John will be 61 or 62.
According to my info John is a world expert on birds, a hobby and later career that he started at Fox Lane along with a bunch of others, myself included.

I guess I mis-remembered. Maybe he had an older brother in my year?

David, his younger brother was in my year and a good friend in school. I remember his garden had hundreds of miniature trees in neat rows. I never knew what they were but clearly he had a very keen interest in horticulture at a very early age. John, his elder brother I knew to nod to, mainly because of my friendship with David . They both had a shock of blond hair and very similar features. I guess John would be 2 or 3 years ahead of me which would make him 62 ish as John said.
John, sorry good to hear from you again. Like Frank I hope things are getting back to normal.

A response to 'rocketmanjohn' I seem to remember both John and David Lawton, and think that it was David who gave me the small leather pocket book which I still have. I checked out the Photograph of Leyland Juniors 1955, and I too have a photo of the same time, but a different class, possibly 4B - Mr Stephenson was the Teacher, many of the faces on your photo seem familiar, is the guy on the end of your row Geoff Parkinson, who served his time at the R.O.F.

MjO, almost, it's David Parkinson and he did indeed serve his apprenticeship at ROF. We were best pals at school but stupidly lost touch for many years. 4 years ago I met his brother in law Brian [I think] Curran who told me David had suffered a stroke and was badly paralysed, I never did get to see him.
