Caroline, Way back we used to go down past Worden Park Lodge and turn right past Roocrofts farm towards Ulnes Walton for our Sunday walk. You went through a field where the Local Authority emptied the contents of the earth closet collection cart on the land as fertiliser, complete with newspaper etc. Any disposal plant, no matter how enviromentally unfriendly, has to be better than that, and would get my vote. Incidentally, do you remember when the modern tanker version stopped on the hill outside Chorley in the 1950`s when the emptying valve rusted through and broke off emptying the tanker down the main road to Charnock Richard, closing the road whilst it was cleaned up. Or the farmer who was going through Luddenden Foot near Hebden Bridge to do a spot of "muck spreading" when the control accidentally came loose and sprayed the contents all along a row of semi-detached houses, now that really raised a stink, I can tell you. Enough,I hear you cry, its all true though. Cheerio, Bill.

There was a farmer a couple of years back who wasn't happy with his council tax or summat - went and sprayed the council offices with his muck spreader! Can't think where it was, but it wasn't local.

When I see the term "lagoon" on the cartoon I am reminded of the "lagoons" the Coal Mines had where waste water was allowed to settle before passing into the nearby river, clean. As Chief Engineer at the Paper Mill I got periodic calls from Coal Board engineers upstream of the mill, saying sorry but our lagoon has burst its banks, don`t take any more water from the river. This was tragic as my only other water supply was from a bore-hole, and it had a very high mineral content, totally unsuitable for making paper. In terms of "once bitten, twice shy" I would fight against a lagoon unless there was an assurance of nil pollution to public water courses if there was an accidental discharge. I know its a bit technical, but its serious when it happens, so watch out. Sorry for going on, from over the Pennines, Cheers, William R.

William, back to 'earth closets'........I must be one of the last people to have had one. When my children were small, we lived in a very old cottage at Wrightington Bar, where the toilet was at down the garden . I think the term was ' thunderbox ' for this arrangement ! Two blokes from Wigan Council used to come with a tanker every Monday to empty said convenience. Worst memory is having to fish out one of the kittens that had fallen in , and then wash it under the tap!

If you want a really unsavoury septic tank memory.....
My husband used to be an engineer on oil tankers. (Before he met me.) One tanker he was on allowed the officers' wives to accompany their husbands. Sewage used to be collected in a tank, to be discharged in the open ocean. However, when the time came to flush the septic tank into the seas, the outlet pipe was blocked. A brave volunteer had to dive (yeeeeuch!) beneath the surface (hope his tetanus was up to date!) and shift the blockage - turned out one of the wives had been flushing sanitary protection down the loo, contrary to regulations. I hope the poor chap had access to a power shower after his exertions!!!

Wiganer, I once got into DEEP TROUBLE with the M.D. at Star Paper because one of my plumbers was walking round the department staffed by females with a similar offending article on a piece of wire demanding ownership. I was less than pleased about this. Cheers Bill.
