Rag and Bone Man?
#11
I always used to think that the rag and bone man really would collect bones if you had them-for the glue factory.Yuk!
Can't be true.

Yippee I'm close to 400.
If Bill can get a mark for apologising about his typing then I can for this.

And who is trying to get well in with the teacher then, and get extra stars? I`ll have to buck my ideas up to get to 400 posts, how about it Martin, do I get any good Conduct marks? William R.

I've been thinking about those bones-as in "Any Rag Bones!!!"
Maybe they were whalebone corsets like my Grandma wore.Used to try them on sometimes. For a laugh!
We were told that all those gasmasks were to be stored for the next time.I wonder if they are still stockpiled somewhere.Great fun sitting around the seats of the school air raid shelter in spite of the serious side.I liked the Horlicks tablets we had to chew.
Pleased to hear you did get to Balshaws once upon a time,Bill.

Talking about making glue out of bones - when I first came to Barnsley there was a works opposite our premises which processed hides from the local abbatoir. They used to unload thjem at the roadside from a wagon, they also had a plant for digesting bones for glue. The smell was horrendous if the wind was the wrong way, the local bus people would not allow their workers to travel on the bus because they ponged so bad. The hide wagon had been one day and we thought there has been a frost, until it was found that the road was covered with maggots. I have nmever seen anything like it, coming from an elite place like Leyland, but the local fishermen soon cleared them up. The digester is no more, neither is the Flenser, M.F.I and Power House are there to name but two. You don`t want to know what you missed. Cheers from over the Pennines, William R

I note Martin has been putting more posts in recently trying to catch up with me. It's quality that counts not quantity Martin. Congrats on 400 Linda, and still going strong. Must have been heck of a job catching a whale just to make a pair of corsets. Poor Whale. Bet his wife was blubbering when he got caught. And no doubt he sang to her "Whale meet again" as he got dragged away on the harpoon.

Noel, Lady G once told me she likes to watch whales, I thought she was a rugby fan (coming from Balshaws) and meant Wales. I think its a New Zealand thing, she may tell us about it. Are you there Lady G? Cheers Bill
