There's been a lot of fuss in the media about awarding the various orders of the British Empire when we no longer have an empire. Any suggestions as to how to update the honours system or should we just jack it all in now?

I read that Fred Dibnah is going to buy a new, trade mark, flat cap for his palace visit. I hope it`s not his intention to wear it throughout the ceremony. Anyway, if he did, it would only be on a par with Jamie Oliver turning up in an open necked shirt.

The logical thing is replace the word "empire" by "commonwealth".
Or scrap it all together.

When you look at the recipients and what they have or have not done,surely most people must ask why such a system should continue.
I suppose that while singing a few songs is considered more worthwhile than working in a factory, it may well continue !
We don't see too many lathe / milling machine operators receiving their knighthoods !
But again, are there any manufacturing people left in the UK ?

Whilst a kindly lollipop lady may receive a minor gong for her long service is someone thinks to nominate her, apparently the more senior awards are reserved for people in the public eye. If you're in the higher eschelons of the Civil Service you get a gong just for being there long enough. Hurrumph! At least the pop stars, actors and sportspersons who are rewarded have done something which has improved the quality of people's lives. I think if the honours system is to be retained it needs a thoroughly good shake-up.
