Booth's shop was on the east side of Towngate, opposite the old Public Hall. We lived at the bottom end of Church Road, just a couple of hundred yards up from the Cross. Our house became a doctors' office for a few years and then was demolished as part of the Towngate "renovation". My Dad, brother and I were regulars for quite a few years, as it was an easy walk to the barbershop from home.

If you have the "Archive Photographs" book on Leyland by David Hunt and William Waring, there's a photo on page 63 shows Booth on the pavement talking to the owner of the furniture store, Ben Pickup, in his car (a Triumph "Renown" mis-identified as a "Mayflower"). The photo was probably taken around 1954.

I remember Booth Moss very well. My Mum used to take me to him for a trim when I was about 5 or 6, so about 60 years ago! I was initially quite apprehensive about going but from what I recall, he was a pleasant enough man.....I was just worried he may cut my ear off! His name intrigued me. To this day, I don't think I've heard of anyone else with the Christian name 'Booth'.

I believe his shop was taken over in the late 1950's/early 1960s by Dick Mosscrop, who was there until he had to move to Balcarres Road due to redevelopment in the 70s. I know Dick's son, so may be able to get some more accurate dates for you and find out what happened to Mr Moss when he left the shop.

On one of our occasional visits to Leyland after we emigrated, I had a haircut at Mosscrop's place on Balcarres Road. I hadn't realised he'd taken over Booth Moss's business and then moved following the Towngate remodel.
