Wellington Park
#41
Frank!
I remember that Church Rd paper round, the house opposite Wellington was called Beech House. It had a gravel drive that curved round to the front door, this was quite dangerous if you rode your bike a bit too fast. I think the house was used by Leyland Motors for visiting VIPs before Stokes Hall was built. This too has been redeveloped into a small housing estate. I remember going to see the opening of Stokes Hall by Harrold Willson the then Prime Minister

You're spot on, Frank. I remember it well and have come a cropper a couple of times on that gravel! So where exactly is Wellington Park, relative to the locations of the old Wellington House and Stokes Hall?

We have a family legend about the Coronation of the present Queen that involves the fields around that site. The family were all gathered at our paternal grandparent's house at 2 Crawford Avenue, which had a large field behind it which was leased (or maybe owned) by Jimmy Lord, who had the butcher shop at the top of Union Street/Fox Lane. It went all the way across to Church Road. He had cows grazing there.

I got bored with the Coronation and went out in the backyard. Two of his cows were right up against Grandma's backyard fence. Just as the Archbishop was putting the crown on the new Queen's head, I dashed in and said "There's cows out there". Never heard the last of it!
