Back at Tescos, brandishing a trolley..
I had a good look round when stood in the car park there for the first time last month. Tescos makes nonesense of the original town street plan! And since then I've thought " why are there listed protected buildings but never listed road systems? " When one thinks, the streets and roads are ancient trackways which are in fact much much older and existed before most of the buildings!!! So why don't we look after them as well??

I am trying to view the photo's of Tesco, but i'm not having any luck. Was Tesco built on the Carrefour/Mainstop site? What has been built on the public hall site?

Tesco's was built on the land adjacent to the old library/Royal Navy club and extends as far as the chemists shop near the cross, and back towards Eden St . The car park runs down to where the swimming baths are. I think that's what the public hall became, part of the car park. I think Martin may have removed my photos of Tesco's being built. I'll send you one Sandie next time I go there .

Thanks Noel, it sounds pretty big. Last time we went to the UK, relatives took us over to the big centre at Manchester, it's fantastic. We haven't got anything that big in Brisbane.

A good point, Caroline. I saw an interesting TV programme about York which mentioned that the buildings have retained the original dimensions from the Viking street plan. When an old building either fell down or was demolished, the new build over the top kept to the same size as the original Viking plot. I would imagine this is probably the case for other old towns too - Chester springs to mind. So in places like that, the old streets are maintained.
But in other towns buildings and the streets they were on have been swept aside for road widening schemes and new routes. We can't hold back progress, but it might be nice to see some of the old thoroughfares retained.

Lesley, What you say about holding back progress is very true, however it`s a two edged sword. Given the choice of losing some old roads (together with 20 years of boarded up dereliction, the old Co-Op being a prime example) in exchange for the Tesco development, I know which I`d vote for.

It was said to be one of the largest in Britain, Sandie.
It's referred to frequently as Leyland Airport.
